Museo Ara Pacis, Rome | May 29 – October 4, 2026
Rome’s Museo dell’Ara Pacis brings roughly 200 photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe together for an exhibition built around a single, deceptively simple idea: beauty as a form of absolute discipline. Curated by Denis Curti, Robert Mapplethorpe. The Forms of Beauty is organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura and Marsilio Arte, promoted by Roma Capitale and its Department of Culture, and produced in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York.
Mapplethorpe (New York, 1946–1989) worked less like a documentarian and more like a sculptor who happened to use a Hasselblad instead of a chisel. His images carry a formal rigor that borders on classical — geometry, light, and composition handled with the same exacting precision whether the subject was a human body, a portrait, or a still life. The exhibition leans into that consistency, treating his entire visual language as a single sustained pursuit of pure form rather than a body of work divided by genre. Several previously unseen pieces are included.
This Rome presentation closes out a larger touring project that began at Le Stanze della Fotografia in Venice and continued at Palazzo Reale in Milan, bringing the trilogy to its final stop.
