Switzerland’s mountain resort of Verbier is set to gain a striking new cultural hub, with Kengo Kuma & Associates’ design slated for completion in 2031. The scheme centers on an 800-seat concert hall paired with a more intimate secondary auditorium, alongside an “agora” — a communal gathering space conceived as an informal crossroads for locals, artists, and visitors alike. Rounding out the programme are art galleries, a café, and dedicated areas for children.
True to the Tokyo-based studio’s design philosophy, the building keeps a deliberately low profile, declining to compete with the surrounding peaks and instead settling into the alpine terrain as a natural extension of it. Glazed volumes are woven together with timber framing, while a series of gently curving roofs appear to overlap and cascade across the structure like layered terrain itself. Deep overhanging eaves shelter open-air spaces beneath them, softening the boundary between built form and landscape.
The project forms a cornerstone of Verbier’s broader push to establish itself as a year-round destination rather than a purely seasonal one. Once complete, the centre is intended to host a rotating programme of cross-disciplinary events, drawing on both the local community and an international audience.
