Warner Bros’ release calendar is shifting again: Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II” has moved from its previously announced October 1, 2027 date to February 18, 2028. This marks the third delay for the sequel. The new date puts it in position to capitalize on the Presidents’ Day long weekend — a strategy that worked well for Black Panther back in 2018. The flip side: the gap between the first film and its sequel will now stretch to nearly six years.
The reasoning behind the repeated delays appears straightforward — production start dates kept slipping, leaving Reeves needing more time for post-production. He’s been working on the script since late 2022. Filming was originally planned for 2024, then pushed to 2025, and now appears to be underway, with production expected to run through October.
The returning cast includes Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Barry Keoghan, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell, all reprising their roles from the first film. They’ll be joined by new additions Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves has described the sequel as “a very different kind of Batman movie” — a hint that both tone and narrative structure may shift from the first installment. There’s also a change behind the camera: cinematographer Greig Fraser, who shot the original, is being replaced by Erik Messerschmidt. Plot details remain tightly guarded, though industry rumors suggest Sebastian Stan could be playing serial killer Victor Zsasz. More surprising is the buzz linking Henry to the role of Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. Meanwhile, the characters played by Johansson and Dance reportedly aren’t drawn directly from established comic-book figures, but appear to be composite or reimagined creations.
The first The Batman hit theaters on March 4, 2022, to strong critical reviews and grossed $773 million worldwide, a solid result given the rocky post-COVID theatrical landscape. Before this franchise, Reeves’ filmography included Cloverfield, Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes.
