IKEA’s new Kompishäng collection is aimed at students and young people who find themselves relocating from one rental to the next. The Swedish company set out to create a line of furniture and decor that is both affordable and easy to transport. The range comprises 12 pieces, developed by IKEA’s design team after visits to a number of shared rental homes in central London occupied by tenants aged 20 to 28. The designers noted a recurring pattern of improvised storage solutions and bulky, hard-to-move furniture — observations that shaped their brief for an alternative.
Among the standout pieces is a slim solid-pine desk with steel legs that assembles in just two steps and requires no tools. A hanging three-compartment storage unit doubles as a backpack, allowing belongings to be carried straight out the door on moving day. Two wooden stools can be stacked to form a makeshift shelving unit, while a side table folds flat into a bag-like form for easy transport.
According to IKEA representatives, the collection’s guiding principle was striking a balance between durability and portability — furniture built to last, but light enough to follow its owner from one address to the next.
