The creative director of Prada and Miu Miu has formally stepped into the role of director at the cultural institution she founded three decades ago.
Back in 1993, the formidable Italian couple Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli founded Fondazione Prada, a Milan-based cultural institution that has since operated as a hub for exhibitions, education, and multidisciplinary programming. For thirty years, Prada’s fingerprints have been all over everything the Foundation does — but now she’s making it official, stepping into the role of director herself.
“From the very beginning, Fondazione has been about exploring human culture in all its complexity and diversity,” Prada says. “Over these thirty years, I’ve kept returning to the same question, in different forms: how can artistic and intellectual research actually shape people’s lives? Chasing sharper, more relevant answers to that question is still the core mission I’ve set for the foundation.”
The Foundation’s focus these days centers on questions about our collective future — and Prada won’t be tackling that alone. She’ll be working alongside a coordinating committee that includes Giuliana Bruno, the Emmet Blakeney Gleason Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard; Giancarlo Comi, professor emeritus of neurology at Milan’s Vita-Salute San Raffaele University; Theaster Gates, artist, activist, and professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago; Alejandro González Iñárritu, the filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer; and Salvatore Settis, archaeologist, art historian, and professor emeritus at Pisa’s Scuola Normale Superiore.
